MOVE FOR AIDS 2006

“I APPLAUD, WHOLEHEARTEDLY, WHAT JAMES IS VENTURING TO DO WITH THIS BOOK. I AM HONORED TO BE CONTRIBUTING TO THIS PROJECT.”
Hugh Jackman

“AS A GLOBAL ARTIST, JAMES USES HIS MASTERY OF THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGES OF IMAGE, MUSIC AND DANCE TO CONVEY THE THRILL AND JOY OF LIFE. JAMES’ POWERFUL INSIGHT IS THAT CELEBRATION IS THE KEY TO AIDS PREVENTION. MOVE FOR AIDS INSPIRES YOUNG PEOPLE TO CHANGE NOT THROUGH PROVOKING FEAR, BUT BY TAPPING INTO THEIR GREAT RESERVES OF OPTIMISM, HUMOR AND HOPE. MOVE FOR AIDS IS AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME.”
Bill Bowtell, Director HIV/AIDS Project, Lowy Institute for International Policy, Sydney

Australian born Houston, initially photographed over fifty of New York’s leading dancers in 2001 and 2002, in a dynamic photographic essay. The striking images then became part of Houston’s fourth book, MOVE, which followed his highly acclaimed books, RAWRAWMOVES, and and ONE, which was released in 2005 to benefit Breast Cancer.

MOVE FOR AIDS launched in New York City in October 2006 with an exhibition and book signing at MILK Gallery. The event was hosted by Hugh Jackman, who also wrote the book’s foreword. A screening of the documentary film on ‘the making of MOVE’ was also debuted. The launch was a great success and raised money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The strong publicity received in New York set the stage for the following launches in London and Sydney.

“JAMES HAD A BIG IDEA. HIS ENERGY WAS CONTAGIOUS; I WAS LITERALLY MOVED BY HIS DESIRE TO COMMUNICATE. I LOVE MAVERICKS. I’M ATTRACTED TO THEM. THAT’S WHY I LOVE THIS MOVEPROJECT.”

Over 500 ticketed guests attended including some of London’s A-List: Kevin Spacey, Natalie Imbruglia, and Jade Jagger. The MOVEFOR AIDS Exhibition then followed at the Getty Image Gallery.
