Fall 2006 – Australian-born photographer, James Houston, released his fourth book, MOVE, with a foreward by actor Hugh Jackman. This book brings together photographs of over fifty dancers from leading American dance companies. With its striking black & white images, MOVE is a dynamic photographic essay capturing the raw energy and emotion of movement. Pushing the human body to its physical limits, Houston creates unique images that go far beyond traditional dance photography. Houston’s background as a sculptor inspired him to direct the dancers and juxtapose their bodies to create arresting new shapes. “His work is phenomenal. James brings forth the majesty of the body through line, form and creativity,” says Desmond Richardson, co-artistic director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet who participated with Houston on this project.
This project extends beyond the printed page. Houston’s photographs will be presented at exhibitions and in a documentary film on the making of the project. With the support of global sponsor HUGO BOSS (who sponsored Houston’s first book RAW in Australia in 1997), Hugh Jackman will host a spectacular event for the exhibition in New York on October 23rd, 2006 at MILK Gallery (450 West 15 Street). The MILK Gallery exhibition will be open to the public from October 24th – October 28th. Additionally, from October 18th – October 27th HUGO BOSS will display a selection of prints from MOVE at their 5th Avenue flagship location. All author royalties will be donated to Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA).
In London Elle Macpherson and David Furnish will host a gala event November 7th, 2006 with the exhibition opening on November 10th at the Getty Image Gallery hosted by British GQ magazine. Both are in conjunction with the Elton John AIDS Foundation. On November 30th, 2006 the exhibition launches in Sydney, Australia to coincide with World AIDS Awareness Week, which occurs in early December. Gala ticket sales will be donated to support AIDS in Australia.
Houston’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout Australia, Asia, and Europe. He is recognised as one of the industry’s leading body/beauty photographers. His images of world renowned celebrities including: Cate Blanchett, Kevin Spacey, Kirsten Dunst, Naomi Watts and Hugh Jackman can be seen in magazines including Vogue, British Glamour, French Glamour, and Interview. Houston’s clean and graphic style is also highly sought after by clients including Chanel, Donna Karan, Max Mara, Givenchy Paris, Gap, and HUGO BOSS.
James Houston’s three previous books, RAW, RAWMOVES (Fine Arts Press/Craftsman House, 1997 and 1999, respectively), and ONE Yoga moves (Jamie Durie Publishing, 2005) all focus on the human body.
